Horticulture is a diverse and dynamic industry that encompasses the commercial production of:
- Fruit
- Vegetables
- Flowers
- Ornamental plants
It also includes the design, establishment, and maintenance of:
- Parks and gardens
- Leisure and sports grounds
- Open spaces
- Managed landscapes
It is a profession which offers a diversity of jobs to suit a wide range of talents. The profession also needs researchers, technologists, marketing experts and managers to shape the industry for the future.
SRUC offers both Horticulture and Horticulture with Plantsmanship courses. Horticulture programmes are delivered from our teaching campuses at SRUC Edinburgh, SRUC Elmwood and SRUC Oatridge.
The courses are also taught at the Glasgow Botanic Gardens, while Horticulture with Plantsmanship programmes are delivered in partnership with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. We are very proud of our links with these prestigious locations, which allow you to benefit from the considerable resources and expertise of both organisations.

Horticulture with Plantsmanship
This course covers a wide range of horticultural skills, from botanical issues relevant to horticulture today to techniques for restoring historic gardens.

Production Horticulture
This course is designed to give you the basic skills you need to work in production horticulture, for example in garden centres, plant nurseries, and crop production.

Introduction to Horticulture
This entry-level course will give you an opportunity to develop a wide range of horticultural skills and knowledge.

Parks, Gardens and Green Spaces
Gain the knowledge and practical skills to become a horiculture technician or supervisor.
- SVQ Level 6

Soils and Sustainability
This course is designed for students interested in a career in land-based management or environmental protection, and teaches the importance and role of soils in the 21st century.
